Donations will go to rebuilding efforts on the ground.
At a reception on March 7 at the Fil-American Multicultural Center in Oxon Hill, Maryland the Turkish Coalition of America (TCA) presented the National Philippine Cultural Foundation with a $25,000 donation to aid the Typhoon Haiyan relief efforts.
Special guests at the reception included Congresswoman Rep. Donna Edwards (D-MD), H.E. Jose Lampe Cuisia, Jr., Ambassador of the Philippines to the United States, Aydan Karamanoglu, Counselor and Spokesman of the Turkish Embassy, Maryland Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller, Maryland State Delegate Kriselda Valderrama, Prince George's County Executive Rushern L. Baker III, and Prince George's County Council Member Obie Patterson.
TCA spearheaded the effort and pledged up to $ 100,000 for the relief campaign, which is organized in collaboration with Turkish Philanthropy Funds. Working with Filipino American organizations, donations will go directly to rebuilding efforts on the ground in the Philippines. The other three designated recipients include the Filipino Community Center of Hawaii, the Filipino Community Center of Seattle, and the Phillipine American Chamber of Commerce of Texas in Houston.
"TCA is proud to join with Turkish Americans in the Washington, DC metropolitan area in donating these much needed funds to the relief effort in the Philippines," said TCA President G. Lincoln McCurdy. "Not only will this donation help Filipinos rebuild their devastated communities, but we hope that it will begin a new friendship between Turkish Americans and Filipino Americans."
Since its inception in 2007, TCA has donated $400,000 in humanitarian aid to various American heritage communities to relieve suffering from war and natural disasters.
