On December 17, Mexico and Turkey signed a Strategic Cooperation and Partnership Framework for the 21st Century, during Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto’s visit to Ankara. The 12 cooperation agreements seek to strengthen economic, scientific and diplomatic relations between the two countries. The signature ceremony also marked the 85th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between Turkey and Mexcio.
“We really wish to energize the existing huge economic potential Turkey and Mexico enjoy. As one of the most important countries in Latin America, Mexico will open its geography to Turkey and Turkey, in turn, will serve as the gateway for Mexico to the Middle East, the Caucasus, Central Asia, the Russian Federation and the Balkans,” Turkish President Adullah Gül said during a joint press conference with his Mexican counterpart.
President Nieto stressed the significance and importance of the historic relations between the two countries and explained that Mexico and Turkey are countries with emerging economies, belong to the G20, are members of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), and participate in various multilateral forums. He noted that Mexico and Turkey, “Are two peoples with a great deal in common. We have been the seat of important civilizations in the past that have contributed to the development of mankind.”
